[attr="class","hopelovetitle"]BIOGRAPHY
[attr="class","hopelovetop"]
Callisto was born in the middle of a blizzard. The wind howled as frost crept over the windows. Her father, Jonathan Wickes, tried everything to keep his wife Alice warm and calm as labor tore through her. The duo were alone, the nearest hospital hours away even without the storm. Alice’s cries began to compete with the shriek of the wind as her stomach shook violently. With a final scream and a wave of blood and amniotic fluid, their daughter burst into the world. The babe wailed as air hit her lungs for the first time. Awe came over them both as they held her close to them. It was then that they noticed the strangeness of her eyes. Her right was a bright, entrancing blue like her father’s. Her left was a wild, lively green like her mother’s. Heterochromia the doctors would call it. Her father would argue that little Callisto couldn’t decide which she liked more so she took both. [break][break]
Jonathan was a high-profile lawyer and would travel whenever he was needed for a case. He would be gone for weeks at a time, leaving Alice and Callisto in Symphonia. The young girl would go to the local school during the day and then learn about magic with her mother at night. Transformation spells were her favorite, using them to prank her mother all the time. She found that her favorite form was that of a cat and would skulk around Symphonia as such. Something she still does to this day. On the eve of her thirteenth birthday, tragedy struck. A criminal who had been imprisoned by Jonathan down waited outside the courthouse for him. He came up behind him as Jonathan was on the phone with his daughter. The next thing the teenager heard through the receiver was the echo of two gunshots. It wasn’t until her mother received a call hours later that she knew what happened. Her father had been shot twice in the head from behind. The perpetrator had been caught but Jonathan could not be helped. He had died on the way to the hospital.

Life after her father’s death was drastically different from before. Alice returned to her family home in New Jersey. Callisto turned in on herself, the happy, outgoing child became withdrawn and quiet. Her grandparents disliked this attitude and blamed Alice for not disciplining her enough. They spent one year in her grandparent’s home. That’s when her mom met him. Nicholas Todd. That man was a deceptive snake. Wooed Alice with ease and after eight months the two were married and living together, Callisto along for the ride. For the first year and a half things were ok. Calisto was slowly opening up again and her mother was happy. Then one night Nick got drunk. He flipped. Alice was beaten black and blue while the now sixteen-year-old got away with a bruise and some lacerations from a bottle that was thrown at her. The next day Nicholas begged Alice’s forgiveness and convinced her to stay. However, the abuse was not a one-time thing. It happened every time Nick picked up a bottle. And no one would believe them. Nick’s parents were appalled that anyone would suggest their son was abusive and Callisto’s grandparents had washed their hands of their daughter when she remarried. Alice was trapped and Callisto counted down the days until she could escape to college.

Once in college, she got a bachelor’s degree in business and worked in a café by her dorm. She scrimped and saved every penny that didn’t go towards loans in order to help her mother escape. Three months before the end of her senior year, she got a call from the police. They told her that her stepfather, her blood boiled hearing him called that, violently attacked her mom and that she was in the hospital. She drove four hours late at night without stops to get there. She burst into her mother’s room just as the heart monitor flatlined. Time stood still. She didn’t get to say goodbye. She didn’t get to say goodbye AGAIN. For four months it was like she was watching her life from an outsider’s perspective. Nothing felt real. Then one day she was going through a small security box of her mom’s personal items when she found an envelope with her name on it. Inside was the number to an account in her name that held her inheritance from her father according to the note on the paper. She called the number and was astonished at the amount it held. Two-hundred and fifty thousand dollars. It took her a week to process it. She confronted every emotion inside her. Anger at Nicholas, bewilderment at her mother’s refusal to use this money, the grief at her inability to say goodbye. It all washed over her. Then she packed her clothes. She should everything, furniture, jewelry, whatever she couldn’t fit in her suitcase was gone. She paid the remaining amount on her loans and booked a one-way ticket back to Symphonia. Once there she opened her baby: Leaves & Letters Bookstore Café. Sometimes her grief still gets to her, even a year later. But now she takes it one day at a time, book and teacup in hand.
