HABITS & QUIRKS
- Eithne hides her mouth with her hand when she laughs or smiles
- She pulls cruel tricks on bullies when she catches them in action
- During festivals, she will appear in front of children and ask them a question. Depending on their answers means they will either reward them, usually with a small blessing, or spirits them away. Those spirited away return after a few days.
[attr="class","hopelovetitle"]BIOGRAPHY
[attr="class","hopelovetop"]
Darkness permeates her first memory. Pulsing, liquid darkness that enveloped her very being. There was warmth there too. Small vestiges of warmth that faded into a sharp cold. It was there that she was born. Pulled from the writhing ink before being promptly thrown against a grainy substance. Sand. She looked up, her pale eyes searching the sky. It was cloudless. Strange, squishy creatures frolicked before her. Humans. They seemed so content. At her feet was a small plant with gorgeous petals. Flower. She reached out to hold this plant and instantly it blackened. No. Withered. The blackening spread, infecting the ground. Gray seeped into the sky above her as clouds rolled in. The air danced and howled around her. Wind. The nameless being watched as these humans changed their habits. Harvests. Festivals. Tricks. Treats. As she explored these customs and the change in atmosphere, she felt closer to these humans. She felt whole. With her new wholeness, came a name. A purpose. Eithne, goddess of autumn.
[break][break]
Initially, Eithne was excited by her name and purpose. However, with every interaction with the humans, the excitement faded. They seemed to fear her, whether for the serpentine appearance of her lower body or for another reason she didn’t know. But every interaction the goddess had with them made her angrier. As years went on, Eithne began to wear a long flowing white gown in order to hide her tail from humans. She began to play tricks on them. Moving items around, stealing pieces of the harvest, making people lose their way. She was in the middle of stealing milk from cows when that began to change. The farmer, a wizard by the name of Lorcan had caught her. Instead of chasing her off like many others, he proposed a riddle. If she was correct, he would leave and she could continue what she was doing. If she wasn’t, she would have to leave the rest of the herd alone. Impressed by his audacity, she agreed to his terms. With a smile, Lorcan spoke his riddle.
[break][break]
You can carry it everywhere you go, and it does not get heavy. What is it?
[break][break]
Tried as she might, Eithne could not answer him. Admitting defeat, she offered him a blessing. Lorcan only asked for her name. Eithne came around every night, walking with Lorcan as he finished his nightly chores on the farm. The two became rather close, much to the displeasure of Lorcan’s wife. When the jealous wife was unable to convince Lorcan to abandon his friendship with the goddess she took matters into her own hands. She ran to the nearby town and told the villagers of her husband’s magical abilities and that he had been communing with a demon. She tried to convince the town that it was the “snake succubus’” fault but they would not hear of it. They stormed the farm and forcefully pulled Lorcan from the house. When Eithne arrived, it was too late. Lorcan had suffocated from the smoke and the flames had wreaked havoc on his body. The scorned wife had tried to explain herself but the grief-stricken goddess would not hear of it. Her words had caused the death of Eithne’s dearest companion so her words would be stolen from her. She wept as she left Lorcan’s beloved farm for the last time, the earth withering beneath her.
[break][break]
From then on, she traveled through Europe and the Middle East. She continued her tricks but had begun tying the consequences to whether or not the victim can answer her riddles. Fifty years ago, she stumbled upon Symphonia. She now lurks around the town, telling riddles and punishing those she pleases.
